    End of Summer 2019

    Summer 2019 was a good summer. It seemed that there were not as many people in the forest, but we seemed to have good attendance on Sundays for chapel and for potluck.

    Cabins sold

    We would like to welcome Bill and Dawn Huntsman to Tanglewood. They have purchased the Reed cabin, and the first week they were in it, they cleared out a lot of overgrowth and dead fall and had quite a contribution for the annual chipping operation. They plan on staying full time, so it will be great to have someone in the area during the winter months. Stop by and welcome them when you get a chance.

    Update on the Scott Property

    Bill Scott asked me to pass along an update on their property:

    We now have a “Fall Price” for our cabin, “Fort Scott.”  It’ll be listed with Mattie Burtt Realty for $240,000. (Price may be increased next spring, depending on market trends.)
    Since we have limited time to show the cabin, before winter, we’d greatly appreciate any interested Tanglewooders letting us know ASAP.

    Chipping

    Chipping went well I understand, with a lot of help from Paul McGrady and Dave Creed. Seems like it really accumulates right at the end of the season.

This will be the master list, the one that I will use to create the email list for the newsletter. So if you are not on this list or your information is incorrect, you may miss out on some things.     Obituary for Owen Keith Griffith

    Owen Keith Griffith was born on September 16, 1924 in Ponca City, Oklahoma. He passed away on September 12, 2019 in Carrollton, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents Clyde and Jane Griffith and by the mother of his children, Billie Griffith. Keith is survived by his daughters: Jan Biggerstaff and her husband Donnie; Linda Witter and her husband Steve; Meg Zimmerman along with five grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

    Special appreciation goes out to his good friend of many years, Alma Broyles. Keith enlisted in the Army Air Corp on December 7, 1942. He received his pilot wings and commission at age 19. At age 20 he checked out to be a first pilot on the B-17. His crew called him “the old man” as he was younger than the men in his crew. After crew training in Florida they were transferred to the 8th Air Force, 100th Bomb Group located in England flying missions over German territory. In May, 1951 he was recalled to active duty and spent a year in Korea flying the C-119. He retired from the Air Force in 1984 and from American Airlines in 1986. Keith was a member of Hella Temple, Legion of Honor, Masonic Lodge #1451 and American Legion Post 21.

    Visitation will be held from 6-8 pm on what would have been Keith’s 95th birthday, Monday, September 16, 2019 at Dalton & Son Funeral Home in Lewisville, Texas.
    Funeral Service will be held 10:00 am Tuesday, September 17, 2019 at First United Methodist Church-The Colony, Texas.
    Graveside service with military honors will be held at 1:30 pm on Tuesday, September 17, 2019 at Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery in Dallas, Texas.
    In lieu of flowers, please make donations to First United Methodist Church-The Colony, Texas.

    Russell L. Roberts

    Russell L. Roberts passed away Sept. 1, 2019, at his Edmond, Okla., home at the age of 86. Russell was born in 1933, in Oklahoma City, Okla., to J. M. (Jake) and Lilla (Boulware) Roberts. He attended OKC schools, graduating from Classen High School. Russell graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a degree in Geology. He served honorably in the U.S. Air Force from 1955 to 1958 as an F-100 fighter pilot, 1st Lieutenant. He then became a captain in the U.S. Air Force Reserves, serving until 1972.

    In 1953, Russell married Joyce Myers. They made their home in Oklahoma City, Stillwater and, most recently, Edmond. They celebrated 62 years of marriage before the passing of Joyce in 2016.

    Russell started his career in homebuilding and real estate development in 1958, eventually partnering with his younger brother, Phil, in these and many other endeavors. He was still actively involved in the management of the companies at the time of his death.

    Russell was preceded in death by his parents; beloved spouse, Joyce; brother, Harold; granddaughter, Nikki; and grandson, J.B.
    Survivors include his children, Debbie Roberts (Luis Molinar), Janey Walters (Chet), Bill Roberts (Sandy), and Laura Grooms (Marty); grandchildren, Michelle Stubenhofer (Matt), Ryan Reynolds (Adrianne), Chris Walters (Stephanie), Rusty Reynolds (Tiffany), Tanner Grooms (Elizabeth), Lindsay Clark, Travis Grooms, Keegan Grooms (Alyssa), Austin Walters, Allie Roberts, Katie Roberts, Kay Law and Kelly Law; along with six great-grandchildren; brother, Phil (Gayle Ann); and numerous very special nieces and nephews.
    He was fortunate in the last few years to have enjoyed the special companionship of his longtime family friend Mary Kaye Foster.
    In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Edmond Mobile Meals or Oliver and Friends Farm Sanctuary located in Luther, Okla.
    A Celebration of Life service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, 2019, at Baggerley Funeral Home in Edmond.

    We Are Asking Tanglewood Owners To Respect Neighboring Properties

    At chapel last Sunday the couple who bought the land below Tanglewood joined us for worship.   They are in the process of building a home on the property.  They reported several incidents of people from Tanglewood walking and riding ATVs down the fire escape path onto their property.  The workers building the home are concerned as they leave tools at the site and are worried about theft.  The gate at the fence along the fire escape route is now closed.  There is a combination lock on the gate however, it is not locked.  Fortunately, the property owners were very cordial and friendly.  We assured them that Tanglewood homeowners would be reminded not to trespass on private property and to use the fire escape route only in the event of a fire.
     
    Everyone please note, private property also includes the Walker land on the north side of Tanglewood along with the Rupp property, which is the driveway right before the cattle guard entering Tanglewood.
     
    Additionally, if you walk up to the Boyer picnic table, please do not walk across the meadow located just in front of the picnic table.  There is a path on either side that goes up to the picnic table.   

    One final request, if you have a problem or need help while at Tanglewood, please contact a commissioner, if they are available.  Jim Keefer and Otto Lehrman deserve some respite! Thanks for your cooperation

    Greetings! Several things that you should be aware of. 

    Annual Meeting 

    Summer is coming! As usual, Tanglewood Homeowners Association will have their annual meeting in July again. Here are the details. Please mark your calendars: 

    What: Annual Tanglewood Homeowners’ Meeting 

    Where: Keefer Cabin 

    When: Saturday July 6, 2019, 2:00 PM 

    If you have any recommendations for changes in the Tanglewood Rules or Bylaws or want to discuss any other topic concerning the association, this is the place to do it.  

    Nominations for Director 

    Be thinking about who you want your next Tanglewood Acres Homeowners Association Director to be. We must have a minimum of 3 but no more than 9. Nominations are to be made from the floor at the annual meeting. The term is for 3 years. Your current Directors are: 

    • Tim Wint (volunteered to fill in for Fran Beigler) Term expires 12/31/2019 
    • Steve Witter – Term expires 12/31/2020 
    • Shari Copeland – Term expires 12/31/2021 

    Dues

    Annual association dues are $150 and are due at the end of March for the current year. This is the date that was set in 1999 when the bylaws were adopted. No one has paid yet so actually we are all late.  

    If you can get those to me before June 25, then mail them to Tim Wint, 1105 Prairie Creek Place, Flower Mound TX 75028. Later than that, mail them to Tim Wint, 114 Mockingbird Hill, Westcliffe, CO 81252, or bring them to the meeting or drop them by the cabin when you come.  

    Chipping

    We will be chipping all of the slash, tree limbs, small trees, etc. that you can accumulate and stack BY A ROAD. We need to have access to these piles. We can handle limbs up to 8 inches in diameter. The length is not necessarily a problem (within reason). DO NOT CUT THIS UP INTO SMALL LENGTHS; It is a lot of work for you and not necessary. LONGER IS BETTER. In general, IF YOU CAN LIFT IT, WE CAN CHIP IT. 

    Remember: Each property owner gets 30 minutes of chipping time included with annual dues. We time all of the chipping activity. Tanglewood HOA absorbs the transit time between piles. If your pile requires more than 30 minutes, we will charge at the rate of $150 per hour adjusted down to the minute.

    When:  Tuesday August 27, 2019, 9:00 AM and Wednesday August 28, 2019, 9:00 AM

    Fred Lee McGinn

    December 03, 2018

    Fred Lee McGinn III, passed from this life to his eternal home on Dec. 3, 2018. After graduating from Texas A&M University, he became a pilot in the Air Force – a veteran of the Vietnam war. After his military service, he was honored to work for the FBI as a Special Agent – retiring after 27 years. McGinn then served as Head of Security at OC in Edmond for 9 years.
    A giant of a man who only stood 5″10″, his humble spirit and gentle soul made him a respected leader and friend to many. He humbly served 12 years as an elder for his beloved Quail Springs Church of Christ (now The Springs CC). He lived purposefully. He planned for every day and for the future. He put nothing before his faith, family or his service to our country and others. He will be missed.
    McGinn was preceded in death by parents Fred and Sarah (Kuenstler) McGinn; brother David Allen McGinn; and brother-in-law Jay Hudson.
    He is survived by wife of 52 years Barbara Belle (Beasley) McGinn; sons Fred Lee McGinn IV & wife Larissa; Justin Beasley McGinn & wife Bailey; and by daughter Angela Belle (McGinn) Piercey & her husband Gary. All now living locally. His grandchildren include Danny, Joe, Mark, and Will McGinn, Josh, Gabby, and Lilly Barr-Sonoda, Xalen and Kaya McGinn, and Dallas Piercey. He is also survived by his sister, Mary Martha (McGinn) Hudson of Little Rock, Ark.; two brothers, Richard Harvey McGinn & wife Lora of Trophy Club, Texas and Michael Andrew McGinn & wife Rhonda of Humble, Texas; plus many precious nieces and nephews.

    A memorial service will be held at the Springs Church of Christ, 21477 N. Western Ave, this Saturday morning, Dec. 8, 2018 at 11 a.m.

    Web Page – The web page is tanglewoodhoa.info.  It will include this announcement and contains a calendar of HOA events. Password for anything requiring a password is ‘redgate’. Tanglewood ByLaws and Rules are included on the page.

    Workday – The workday will be on Tuesday, July 3 at 9am. Meet where we have Sunday potluck and we will divide the work there.  We need a few able bodied people to help.
    Projects include:
    a) cleaning the creek banks as the creek level is low
    b) clean out downed wood near the road from the gate to the cattle guard
    c) take down a big tree that has fallen between Skipper King’s cabin and the Johnson cabin

    Annual Homeowners Meeting 

    The annual HOA meeting will be on Thursday, July 5 at 10am.  The Kiefers agreed to host again this year.

    Things we need to discuss:

    1. Memorials – acknowledge all owners and friends of Tanglewood that have passed during the year.
    2. Reminder that annual dues are $150 per year and are now due.
    3. Keys to the red gate. We have a new, more secure lock on the red gate. Your old keys should fit but maybe you should check them just in case. If you need keys, see Steve Witter. We need to discuss access to keys by others: 911 dispatch, sheriff, realtors, neighbors.
    4. Security – Because of the ordeal with the red gate lock, we have had some concerns with security. We have had the sheriff up several times to go through and check cabins for forced entry. Maybe it is time to discuss regular security patrols during the winter months.
    5. Grading – Road maintenance has become more difficult because our road base supplier is using a longer bed truck for delivery and it is too tall to go under our power lines. We need to find a solution for grading that includes spreading the road base and maintaining it. Linda Witter has done some research on this.
    6. Burning restrictions – should we include gas grills?
    7. Road Commissioners – Current commissioners and their terms:
    • Jim McCoy 2016,2017,2018
    • Fran Beigler 2017,2018,2019
    • Steve Witter 2018,2019,2020
    • Fran Beigler resigned due to health concerns. Tim Wint has agreed to assume the remainder of her term which runs through 2019. Jim McCoy’s term runs through 2018 so we need nominations for the term 2019, 2020 and 2021.

    Chipping – August 29 and 30 at 9am both days- we need about 8 able bodied people to feed the chipper. We also need people to drag limbs that don’t necessarily need to feed limbs in.

    The continuing ordeal of the red gate lock may be reaching a conclusion.

    A new hardened lock is now on the red gate.

    The combination is 1939.

    Please, DO NOT CUT THE LOCK. If you need in, call: 972.955.0995

    Next Friday, March 30, 2018, we should have a new lock on the gate. This lock is hardened and will have a hidden hasp so that it cannot be cut.

    The new lock will be keyed the same as the original red gate key meaning that your existing keys should work.

    We have ordered 40 new keys so if you have misplaced your key or you are a new homeowner or you have family that needs a key, please let me know:

    Memorial

    Dave McGinn, son of Fred and Sally McGinn, died January 27, 2017, after 17 year battle with Parkinson’s Disease. Dave is survived by his wife Janet, his son Kyle and his daughter Kristy and their families, including six grand children. They all have enjoyed recent visits to Tanglewood and being blessed by the natural beauty of God’s creation!

    Annual Meeting

    Tanglewood HOA generally has their (required) annual meeting the weekend before July 4 celebration. That’s usually when we have the most people around. This year, once again, Jim and Mary Keefer have graciously offered their home for this meeting. Thank you Keefers! Here are the details:

    Chipping

    Chipping will be Tuesday, August 29 and Wednesday, August 30. If you can help us out, it would be greatly appreciated. It’s hard work and there is no pay but other than that it’s a great way to spend time with your friends. Each dues paying property gets 30 minutes of chipping time included. Anything over that 30 minutes gets billed to the property owner.

    Long time Tanglewood Property Owner, Don Courtney passed away July 2, 2016. Don and Yvonne were co-owners of Happy Shack along with Waymon and Regena Harrison. Our thoughts and prayers are with Yvonne and his family. A memorial contribution will be made to Custer County Clinic in his honor.

    The following appeared in the El Reno Tribune:

    Funeral services for Don R. Courtney will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 7 in the Benson Memorial Chapel with Rev. Charlie Blount of First Baptist Church officiating. The family will receive visitors on Wednesday, July 6 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Benson Memorial Chapel. Services are under direction of Huber-Benson Funeral Home.

    Mr. Courtney died July 2, 2016, at his home in El Reno. He was born July 10, 1934, in El Reno. Don was a farmer and rancher and a lifelong resident of El Reno. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Elks Lodge, Sons of Confederate Veterans and Military Order of the Stars and Bars.

    He served as president of the Oklahoma Farmers Union, the Democratic Committee of Canadian County and the American Agriculture Movement which he helped organize. He also served on several boards including the Metropolitan Planning Commission, Maple School Board and Heaston Rural Water Board. Don was a Red Cross volunteer serving as an instructor and member of the Calamity Janes, participant of the 1979 Washington D.C. Tractorcade and pilot and owner of a Cessna 175.

    On July 30, 1952, Don married Yvonne Novak at the Heaston Church. Yvonne survives him.

    He is also survived by their children, Kathryn Loyall and husband, Larry of Yukon, Karoyl Hyde and husband, Chuck of El Reno and Dennis Courtney and wife, Machelle of El Reno; sister, Regena Harrison of Moore; seven grandchildren and their spouses, Steffani and Cory Jump, Amanda and Ryan Dobbs, Courtney and Justin Roles, Christa and Lance Rushing, Trey and McKenzie Hyde, Debbie Courtney and Stanley Symes and Darce and Dusty Haley; nine great-grandchildren, Cameron Jump, Carly Jump, Riley Dobbs, Drake Dobbs, Cooper Roles, Dane Roles, Colson Rushing, Chyler Rushing and Mia Martinez.

    His parents, Reginald and Lucille Olander Courtney, and a sister, Corine Courtney Smith preceded him in death.

    We now have a way of securing our supplies for our Sunday potluck that does not involve Julie Johnson’s Cabin #3. We now have a steel box which sits inside the wooden fence surrounding Julie’s propane tank and we are hoping that this will be bear-proof as soon as we add a lock. If you have duties for setting up the potluck, this is where you will find supplies.

    Schedule Change for Homeowners Meeting

    It appears that Saturday, July 2 is a busy time in the valley, so rather than taking up your whole day we opted to take up only part of it. Here is what we have settled on:

    Work Day – Saturday, July 2, 8AM-11AM – Right now, we have a few trees in the common areas along the creek that need to be cleared out. It probably won’t take all that long but it would be great to have some help on this.

    HOA Meeting – Sunday, July 3, 2PM – Keefer’s Cabin – Short meeting (shooting for less than 1 hour) to discuss Tanglewood business

    As you know, we get along up here with volunteers taking the duties that provide the things that are part of Tanglewood. Typically, these include chapel duties which include: welcome, lead singing, play organ or guitar, special music, devotional and other duties: prepare for potluck, mail and trash.     Private Road Maintenance

    Some have asked about maintaining the roads on individual properties. The roads inside your property lines are the responsibility of the property owners, however, if enough of you would like to get together and order road base to be delivered, we can certainly help you do that with contacts in the valley and estimates of how much it will take for your particular situation. It will be much more economical to order a large amount because the delivery charges are significant.

  • Tanglewood – Preparing for Summer 2016

    Here’s hoping that you are busy preparing to include some time at Tanglewood this year. We are looking forward to seeing you.

    There is some business that we need to take care of. Here are some dates that we feel will work for the majority of people. As you know, we usually have a work day to take care of Tanglewood property issues and we try to have that close to when we have the annual property owners meeting. Here is what we settled on:

    Saturday, July 2, 9AM-11:30AM Work day

    Not real sure what this will look like until we get there and find out what winter did to us. We will let you know more on this later
    Saturday, July 2, 12 Noon Lunch for those participating in workday

    Saturday, July 2, 1PM Annual Property Owners Meeting

    Usually this will last around an hour. We don’t have any big issues that we know of at this time. If you have agenda items that you would like to see discussed, please respond to this email. Be in consideration of either volunteering to run for road commissioner or suggestions on someone that we should consider.

    Tuesday and Wednesday August 30-31 Chipping

    These are the dates that Casey is available to chip slash for us. Last year it took every bit of the 2 days. Hopefully it won’t this year but we have asked him to be available on Wednesday just in case. We would like help on this if you are up to dragging limbs. Your HOA dues include 30 minutes for chipping.

    That’s about it. There has been a change in how we store the supplies for the Sunday cookout. We are purchasing a bear-proof container to be placed near the cookout area. We will keep all of the dry supplies and utensils, containers, etc. in this instead of cabin #3. Julie has asked that we no longer leave trash in her garage.

    Tanglewood HOA Dues

    Dues remain at $100 per year per principal property represented. If you own several properties you only pay once. Please consider paying yours early or at the HOA meeting in July. You can mail a check made out to “Tanglewood HOA” and “HOA Dues” in the memo to:

    I am saddened to report that Joyce Roberts has passed away.

    I’m very sad to report that Vic Robards passed away on Saturday, January 16, from complications of pneumonia. Here are the details of the funeral:

    Visitation is from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday with family receiving friends from 5-7 p.m. at Ninde Brookside Funeral Home (3841 S. Peoria, Tulsa, OK 74105, (918) 742-5556). A memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church, 403 S. Cincinnati, Tulsa, OK. He will be laid to rest at Green Hill Cemetery, Sapulpa, OK.

    End of Summer 2015

    Dear Tanglewood Friends,

    Well, we had a great time this summer in our beautiful setting. Many of you were able to spend some time here and we enjoyed being able to visit with as many of you as we could. We met some people for the first time this summer, some of whom have been coming for decades but for some reason, our paths had never crossed. It was wonderful to refresh old relationships and build new ones.

    The Crossing

    As many of you know, we had a lot of snow and rain late in May and into June. Early in June, as the snow melt peaked, Goodwin Creek was running bank full and was as full as anyone could remember. It was pretty amazing to watch. And then, our low water crossing near the potluck area by the Johnson cabin gave way and most of the rock washed downstream, causing the crossing to become almost unusable except for big 4 wheel drive trucks. Even heavy delivery trucks were refusing to cross it. We knew that we needed to make some repairs. So, thanks to a hard working team that put in a good half days effort preparing the area and an equally hard working crew of about 20 that volunteered for workday on July 3, we were able to move enough rock into the creek and bring it back to normal. I estimate that it took about 14 tons of rock. Thanks so much for all of the effort that went in to this project.

     

    The Roads

    Even though we had a lot of rain and snow, our roads have remained in fairly good shape. We did, however, notice that from the covered bridge up to the red gate the road base was beginning to erode and expose some rock, so we had 3 loads of road base delivered and spread in this area. This should help.

     

    Slash

    As you know, keeping up with a forest is difficult. Trees die, limbs fall and all of this needs to be cleaned up. We scheduled a chipper to come in to help us with this in late August. Everyone drug limbs and trees out to the roads all during the month of August. By the time the chipper arrived there were MOUNTAINS of slash to be chipped. It took about 3 days, but we finally worked our way through it, thanks again to a hard working crew that helped feed all of this into the chipper. The forest looks so much better and we have reduced the risk of fires greatly. Each property owner receives 30 minutes included in your HOA fee. I recorded the time spent on each property and if the 30 minutes was exceeded, I will send you an invoice later.

    Tanglewood HOA Meeting 2015

    On July 3, 2015 our annual Tanglewood Home Owners Association meeting was held and you will find the minutes of that meeting below. Of particular interest, Jim McCoy was nominated as Road Commissioner to replace outgoing commissioner Jo Kennedy (thank you Jo for all you have done). You will find that ballot also attached. Write in candidates are also accepted. You may submit your ballots either by responding to this email or by mail to the address listed below. These need to be in by October 3, 2015 according to the bylaws.

    There have been no notices for 2015 HOA dues as of this date, so essentially, the only owners that have paid are some who paid at the meeting. So, if you have not paid, please send your checks to me: Tim Wint, 114 Mockingbird Hill, Westcliffe, CO 81252. I will be here until the end of August. After that you may send them to me at 1105 Prairie Creek Place, Flower Mound, TX 75028. The dues are $100 and checks should be made payable to “Tanglewood Acres HOA”. I will send out a second notice later this month for those that have not paid by then.

    # Makes sense to raise the dues. John Balding thinks some people are getting a deal because they have slash and those that don’t are paying their share for 30 minutes of chipping.
    # Becky Conway moved to raise HOA dues to $150 beginning in 2016. Second by Linda Witter
    @ (Being somewhat unfamiliar with the proper procedures, we thought this was a legitimate vote. In reviewing the by-laws, we realize that it is required that we present a motion to raise dues to the entire HOA and then take a vote at the following HOA meeting. So if everyone is good with that, we will present the increase in 2016 to become effective 2017)
    @ Discussion – Question – what about multiple lots in family
    – (Point of clarification – this was not discussed in the meeting, however, dues are according to active lots. If you own a lot or lots in addition to the one your cabin is on, you do not owe dues for these additional lots. If, however, you would like to have multiple votes concerning Tanglewood business, then this is allowed at the rate of 1 vote per full dues paid)
    – Increase will not affect distribution of dues – they will remain as they are currently.
    – Carried unanimously
    o Chipper will be here August 26. Each property gets 30 minutes then is asked to pay at the rate of $150 per hour. Bring slash to the road. Help is appreciated.
    o Rock to be ordered for crossing
    # Acknowledgement for volunteers getting crossing ready for workday and for those that helped complete the job on workday.
    o Clarification of GPS database update. Updates have been made to various databases, but GPS owners need to update their maps to see the changes.
    o Acknowledged Newcomers and Lotts as new property owners
