      • Election of Road Commissioner/Director for 2024,2025,2026
          • The Tanglewood Acres HOA Members elected Vic King as a new Road Commissioner/Director for 2024,2025,2026. Vic was elected late and instead of his term starting in 2023, he will start in 2024.
      • Shari Copeland has served for 4 years. This was necessary because no nominations were presented for a new Director during the 2023 Annual Tanglewood HOA Meeting in July 2023. This puts us in the position of having to elect 2 directors in 1 year. So I am asking you to carefully consider running for the position of Director. Our by-laws state that to be a Director: “The Directors need not be residents of Colorado but must be property owners”, and that “owners shall include only those maintaining property ownership, which includes keeping their property tax payments current and making their annual assessment payment on a timely basis.”. Nominations will be taken at the HOA Annual meeting. If you are interested, respond to this eMail and I will give you information on the duties that we perform.
      • HOA Annual meeting will be held in Jim and Mary Keefer’s cabin at 10:00AM on July 1. Remember that all are welcome but only members may vote and only 1 vote per dues paying property.
      • HOA Workday will start at 2PM on July 1. Bring gloves, rakes, maybe shovels. We will have a lot of forest clean up to do, and probably some fence to repair.
      • Ott Lehrman Memorial Service will be held on July 5, probably in David’s Chapel.
      • Sangre de Cristo Electric Right-of-way clearing: Over the winter, SDCEA cleared trees from the power line right-of-way. We lost probably 150 trees, some very old, very large, beautiful trees. Sad to see it happen like this, but SDCEA is reducing its liability for fires caused by trees coming in contact with power lines. You will see a difference so don’t be surprised.
      • Dues – Tanglewood HOA dues remain at $150 per year, one of the last great bargains actually. If you have already paid, thank you very much. These are due now if you have not paid and they may be satisfied by:
          • Mailing a check to: Shari Copeland, 4624 NW 161st, Edmond, OK, 73013
          • Bringing a check to the meeting.
          • Delivering a check to Shari at Tanglewood
          • Please don’t bring cash. It cannot be mobile deposited and requires a trip to Westcliffe to the bank.
          • The preferred way is to set up an automatic, recurring bank draft from your bank to United Business Bank. That way you don’t need to worry about it again. If you want to do this, respond to this email and I will set up a meeting to assist you.

  • Ott Lehrman

    Our dear friend and long-time Tanglewood owner has passed away. I received word today that Ott left us last night, at his cabin in Tanglewood, the place he loved the most and where he and Phyllis spent many happy times. We will miss him dearly.

    Ott was always the one to go to for advice on Tanglewood matters, for help on any problems that might arise in maintaining our mountain properties, and for any bit of history concerning Tanglewood or the people who lived there. He and Phyllis were always happy to see anyone who happened to drop by and had plenty of stories to tell, each one finishing the other’s sentences.  

    Ott and Phyllis braved many winters in Tanglewood to the amazement of everyone. Through snow drifts and howling winds, they insisted on staying there all winter long. They always kept tabs on who was on Tanglewood property. Ott graded our roads and was very particular about how he wanted things: ditches cleaned out and roads crowned just so. No matter what it was, Ott was always willing to contribute his expertise for the good of the community.

    I have not received word on funeral plans, but plans are to hold a memorial service in David’s Chapel tentatively on July 5. I will let you know when I receive any news. 

  • Wenanah Anderson

    Long Time Tanglewood Friend, Wenanah Anderson Has PassedNovember 2, 1922 – November 12, 2023
    Stella Wenanah (Dodd) Anderson, age 101, passed peacefully on the morning of November 12, 2023, in Canton, Texas. She was born November 2, 1922, to John Thomas Dodd and Marion Madge (Pitts) Dodd in Dallas, Texas. Wenanah was one of 6 daughters born to this union and the oldest living to adulthood.

    She lived in Dallas near Fair Park for many years during her youth. Her father moved the family to the New Hope community when she was a teenager. She graduated from Mesquite High School in 1939 and later married Thomas Milton Anderson on April 12, 1940. They were married 58 years at the time of his death in 1998. Together, they had one child, John Thomas Anderson, born in May, 1941. He would say he learned to believe he could do anything that he set his mind to because she taught him, he could. The classic story of The Little Engine that Could was the vehicle used to teach this defining characteristic.

    Wenanah worked for A. Harris, a department store in downtown Dallas, as a switchboard operator. She later worked for Atlantic Richfield, first as a switchboard operator, and then moved up the ranks to the land department where she became head of the division order department. She remained at ARCO for 35 years until her retirement in 1984.

    Wenanah made many lifelong friends. She kept in touch with many of them after retirement, and she shared with some of them her passion for traveling the world.

    She was a faithful member of First Christian Church in Mesquite, Texas. She served on the board, in the choir, and in numerous other capacities. She was active in the Sunnyvale book and garden clubs, and many other activities that were social in nature. She loved hosting and attending parties and did so right to the end, attending the veteran celebration at her assisted living residence the day before her passing.

    Wenanah is preceded in death by her husband, Bub, parents, John & Madge, sisters Jewell, Gwen, Madean and one unnamed sibling. She is survived by sister, Pat Trimble; son, Tommy Anderson and wife, Jan; granddaughter, Christina Bondesen; grandson, Dan Anderson and wife, Diana; great-grandchildren, Rachel & Nicholas Bondesen; niece Linda Rowell and husband, Jerry, as well as many other nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.Grove-Hill.com for the Anderson family.

  • The Red Gate Is Closed and Locked for The Winter

    This is a heads up: At the beginning of hunting season, the red gate is closed and locked. So, if you are planning on entering Tanglewood or having friends or family stay at your property, please ensure they have a red gate key. You have all been issued keys, so before someone is disappointed after a long drive, please make sure that they have the proper key. Please note that the gate should be left in the same state after entering or leaving. If it is locked on your way in, lock it behind you as you enter. If it is unlocked, there should be a good reason that it is open. The same thing holds when leaving: leave it the same way you found it.

  • Respect for Our Neighbors’ Properties

    This is a reminder that the people who occupy your properties within the 40 acres which make up Tanglewood Acres, are under the same rules and restrictions which owners have agreed to. Please inform anyone visiting your residence, that the rules are for everyone. If you are unclear about the rules, Here is a link so that you may review them: Tanglewood Rules (password is redgate)

    We are surrounded by a number of properties. We have had good relationships with our neighbors. Some neighbors are open to Tanglewood residents and guest entering their property and some are not. Please review the attached map showing the agreements and stating the restrictions that we have received from the owners of these properties.

    Typical restrictions:Some properties are strictly off limits. Please do no enter these properties.If requested, please do not smoke.If you have permission to smoke, be careful with how you dispose of cigarettes.If permission has been given to cross the property only for access to the national forest, please stay on trails to minimize impact.No open fires, same as Tanglewood.If we have right-of-way access, please restrict vehicular traffic to the right-of-way.If you are requested by a property owner to leave a property for any reason, be respectful and do not be confrontational. We are allowed on these properties only at the desires of the property owners. They set the policies. Confrontation will only result in the reduction of our access.

    Celebration of Life

    Sadly, we say goodbye to another wonderful Tanglewood neighbor.

    Obituary

    A Boerne pillar faded away on July 31, 2023, when Dr. Jimmy E. McCoy departed for Heaven after a valiant struggle with Alzheimer’s. The disease stripped much away, but in the end, he remained a distinguished and gentle soul with a heart for helping others.

    Jim McCoy was born March 12, 1942, to hard working parents, Aura Lou and Eugene McCoy. Growing up in Banquete, his world was small, defined by muddy creeks bordering dusty cotton fields that turned up arrowheads and Indian bones. Both his mind and work ethic were shaped by this close-knit life pulled from “To Kill A Mockingbird”, full of forts and exploration.

    He attended Texas A&I University, where he met an outgoing pretty girl from San Antonio named Irene “Cookie” Popp. His studious nature and good looks won her over, and they were married on August 22, 1964, starting a journey that was full of risks, laughter, and love. He briefly taught in San Antonio and Corpus before pursuing medical school, graduating in the first class of UT Health Science Center in Psychiatry (1972), and then finding his niche in Family Practice, (Resident of the Year at Texas Tech in 1979).

    With three young boys in tow, the couple settled in Boerne in 1981 after searching the Hill Country. Starting a medical practice was hard work, but the town embraced the new doctor with an old school mentality. Jim was driven by his own high standards for his profession and his compassion. He believed in listening fully to his patients (as his waiting room attested) and follow-up calls. Countless lives were impacted over his 35 years of practice, having a gift for uncovering ailments by following his instincts and inquisitive mind. He often found that patients simply wanted to hear his counsel during difficult seasons of their lives. In Fall, he walked the sidelines as the Greyhound team doctor, while also cheering for his own boys on the field.

    Happy family times were spent hiking and fishing at their cabin in Colorado, where he blessed his grandchildren with treasure hunts, pancakes, and bedtime stories. During quiet times, Jim could be found casually reading, with multiple pens and highlighters close at hand.

    Jim believed strongly in God, and in salvation offered through His son, Jesus Christ. He grew spiritually over the years until encountering God on his own road to Damascus. Jim identified with Isaiah’s imagery of mounting up like eagles, and having our names written in the palm of God’s hand. This faith was closely tied to his love of America and support for the military and our freedoms.

    As the disease progressed, Boerne blended into Banquete, and his world became small again. His last few months were spent in Menger Springs memory care where, in his mind, he continued in his medical work. The wonderful staff there embraced him during his stay and even let him wear an honorary stethoscope.

    Jim is survived by wife, Cookie; sons, Torin and wife Marissa (grandchildren Cole and Canaan McCoy), Evan and wife Rebecca (grandchildren Anna and Rhett McCoy), and Austin and wife Stephanie (grandchild Barrett Briggs); along with sister, Carroll Brown; and brother, Dale McCoy. He was preceded in death by his parents, and sister, Diann.

    A celebration of his life and legacy will be held on August 10, 2023, at Ebensberger Fisher Funeral Home in Boerne (Viewing/Remembrances 5-7 pm), with a 12 pm funeral service at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church on August 11th (reception to follow).   • Phyllis Lehrman

    We have lost another long time Tanglewood Owner

    On Saturday June 3, 2023, our dear sweet Phyllis Lehrman passed away. We will miss her terribly. She and Ott have lived here for 40 years, and for the last several years, they have stayed in Tanglewood all year long.


    The full text of her obituary:

    Phyllis Jean Lehrman, 91, was born to Howard and Lucia Havens in Newton, KS. Phyllis was the oldest of 13 children. She attended and graduated from Newton schools. Phyllis married Otto Lehrman on May 29, 1949. In their 74 years of marriage, she and Otto set an example for their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren of what it meant to love one another deeply and in all things. 

    Phyllis was a homemaker and worked in the kitchen for the Newton school system while her 4 boys were in school. She was active in the Eagles Ladies Auxiliary while living in Newton. However, her lifelong career was caring for her husband and 4 sons and later her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

    In 1984, she and Otto retired to their home in Tanglewood acres near Westcliffe, CO where they have lived independently for the last 40 years. 

    Phyllis and Otto loved to travel from early in their marriage and they enjoyed many years together traveling in their RV. Their children and grandchildren were often fortunate enough to travel with them, seeing the country and creating many memories. She loved the ocean most of all and would sit and watch the waves roll in while collecting rocks on the beach. Her love of sunsets is one shared with several of her grandchildren. 

    Phyllis was famous for her cooking and few things tasted better than a bowl of her chicken and homemade noodles or a coveted cream puff at a chapel potluck. Cooking was one of the ways she showed her love and compassion for others. There are many wonderful memories shared with friends and family around her table. Nothing made you feel quite as loved as a batch of her waffles on a Sunday morning or a special birthday cake made with love just for you. 

    Phyllis’s passion for the mountains came by way of flowers which was instilled in her by her grandfather. She often named wildflowers as she drove along the highway and would pull off and have her grandchildren stand with them for photos through the years. She would have loved to have a large flower garden, but the rocky soil, deer, and chippies won out and she settled for hanging baskets and planters on her deck. 

    Perhaps the biggest lesson she taught any of us was how to love well. She was a caretaker and always concerned with others and what they needed. She could make everyone feel welcome and cared for. She taught each of us what it means to see the good in all people and how to care for those around us. Her warmth and kindness were extended to strangers and friends alike…many of whom thought of her as their mother figure. We are so grateful for her legacy of love and our prayer is that we can carry on the lessons she taught us to future generations. She was the most beautiful person any of us have ever known.

    She was greeted in eternity by her Lord on June 3, 2023. We are sure that holding her hand was her son, Dean; siblings, Clyde, Marilyn (Tiny), Vernon (Bubber), Janice, Shirley, Brenda; her parents, Howard and Lucia; grandparents, and many other close friends who preceded her.  

    She is deeply missed by her family, especially her husband of 74 years, Otto. She is also remembered by her daughter-in-law, Vicki; sons, Robin (Susan), Gary (Marsha), and Kevin (Irene); grandchildren, Jeremy Lehrman, Sara Lehrman, Jody Schmidt (Craig), Jamie Giles (Ryan), Julie Lehrman, Justin Lehrman (Tara), Maggie Lehrman, Erin Rosfeld (Kerry), and Luke Lehrman (Jenna); and 23 great-grandchildren. Her presence will be missed by many other friends whom she considered family. A private family service will be held in both Colorado and Kansas at a future date.

    A Memorial Service for Michael Andrew McGinn, 74, of Humble, will be held at 10:00am, Saturday, April 8th, 2023 at Kingwood Funeral Home, 22800 Hwy 59 N., Kingwood, Texas.

    Mike was born on November 4, 1948 in Tucson, Arizona to parents, Lieutenant Colonel Fred Lee McGinn Jr. and Sara Harriet Kuenstler McGinn. He passed away on March 30, 2023 in The Woodlands, Texas.

    Mike spent most of his youth in Abilene, TX, and enjoyed traveling to San Antonio and Corpus Christi. He would graduate from Abilene High School where he was a member of the tennis team. He continued to play tennis into and throughout adulthood. After high school Mike attended Cisco Junior College and had a run at a few universities after that — including, but not limited to Texas A&M. (He swore he got in on the merit of his baby brother Dave.) After enjoying all the fun he could, he signed up to serve in the United States Marine Corps, serving from 1972-1976.

    After his time in the Marines, Mike moved to Victoria where he reunited with Dave, and his wife Janet. In Victoria is where Mike and Rhonda first met. They were both working at Union Carbide but met at Victoria Church of Christ. Mike and Rhonda were married on November 22nd, 1979.

    After three children and many moves later, Mike settled his family in Humble, TX. He took a job at Lyondell Petrochemical in 1990 and worked there until his retirement. In Humble is where Matthew, Stephanie, and Brandon would grow up and spend most of their youth and school years. Mike enjoyed watching them participate in sports and school activities, and always joined in on the fun when their friends were around. He was the life of the party. He and Rhonda continued to live in Humble until his death.

    Mike was a loving and devoted husband, father, brother, and PawPaw.

    He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Rhonda Sue Sutton McGinn; son and daughter-in-law, Matthew and Samantha McGinn; daughter and son-in-law, Stephanie and Jamie Ware; and son and daughter-in-law, Brandon and Jessica McGinn. His surviving grandchildren, his pride and joy, include: Allison McGinn and Kennedy Ware, Jadence Young, Deegan and Logan McGinn and Cooper McGinn. Mike is also survived by his sister-in-law, Barbara McGinn of Edmond, OK; brother and sister-in-law, Dick and Laura McGinn of Trophy Club, TX; sister-in-law, Janet McGinn of Pearland, TX; sister, Mary Hudson of Little Rock, AR; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Cynthia and Don Glenn of Silverton, TX; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Melinda and Mitchell Stockton of Lubbock, TX; and his beloved 14 nephews and nieces and their families.

    Mike will be greeted in Heaven by those who preceded him in death; his parents, Fred and Sally McGinn of both Westcliffe, CO and Padre Island, TX; brothers, Fred McGinn of Edmond, OK and Dave McGinn of Pearland, TX; brother-in-law, Jay Hudson of Little Rock, AR; and father-in-law and mother-in-law, Jack and Teresa Sutton of Silverton, TX.

  • TanglewoodHOA – Information on Jim Kennedy

    Some of you may have heard already, but just to summarize:

    Jim experienced pain on the left side of his abdomen last Thursday and went to see his primary care physician who ordered blood tests, an X-ray, and a sonogram. The blood test results indicated leukemia, and he was immediately sent to the emergency room, where he was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. He will be part of a clinical trial following normal chemo for this disease, which will require him to stay in the hospital for at least 5-6 weeks to get intensive chemo. The goal is to get his leukemia in remission, defined as having less than 5% of the white blood cells in his bone marrow being the “bad” kind. Jim was able to go home for a few days before returning to the hospital on Tuesday, April 4 and has started an oral chemo called Hydrea. Jo and Jim are taking one day at a time, feeling God’s peace and presence and asking for prayers.

  • The passing of Skipper King

    Elmer was Skip’s given name, but we all knew him as Skip or Skipper. Skip passed away on March 25, 2023, in Tulsa, OK. So sad to lose a friend that, for many of us, has been around most of our lives. We extend our deepest sympathies to all of the family members. We all truly loved Skip.

    ELMER’S OBITUARY

    Mr. Elmer ‘Skip’ Wilson King Jr., age 90, passed away on March 25, 2023, in Tulsa, OK.  Skip spent most of his life in Oklahoma City and Tanglewood Acres, Colorado. 

    Elmer was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to Elmer W. King Sr. and Essie L. King.  Skip married Betty Aikman of Oklahoma City, OK on June 12, 1955, in El Reno, OK.  Betty was the love of his life, and they were married for 55 years until her death in 2011. 

    Skip was preceded in death by his wife, Betty King and his father and mother, Elmer W. King Sr. and Essie L. King.   

    Skip studied mechanical engineering at the University of Oklahoma. 

    Skip was a fighter pilot in the USAF where he and Betty were stationed in Germany and France.  Skip retired from the military as a C-130 pilot at the Oklahoma Air National Guard at Will Rogers World Airport and was a member of the Gray Eagles. 

    Skip was the owner of Kingcraft Homes, a Custom Homes Building Business.   

    Skip was the longest-living member of Tanglewood Acres, Colorado.  He was an avid pilot, car fanatic, and football fan.  Skip was an enthusiast of anything scientific, mechanical, or gadget-like.  He loved tinkering, building, and repairing stuff. 

    Survivors include son, Victor King, and wife Kelly; son, Gary King, and wife Kim; and daughter, Sherry Kenin and husband Rick.  Eight grandchildren include Taylor King and wife Sarah, Conner King and wife Tina, Abigail King, Courtney Webster and husband Gaige, Corbin King and wife Olivia, Jacob Kenin, Libby King, and Zachary Kenin; and four great-grandchildren include Rory King, Henry King, Bear King, and Luken Webster. 

    Visitation will be held March 30th from 9am-8pm with family on site from 6pm-8pm at Mercer-Adams Funeral Home in Bethany, OK. 

    Memorial services for Mr. Elmer King Jr. will be held on Friday, March 31 at 2:00 p.m. at Mercer-Adams Chapel in Bethany, OK.

  • Sangre de Cristo Plans for Tree Removal

    For several years now, Sangre de Cristo Electric Association (SDCEA), our electric service provider, has been informing us that they intend to remove trees within the power line right-of-way. Just recently, they have reiterated the schedule for that plan and have informed us that they intend to be in Tanglewood either late summer 2023 or early fall. 

    Bad news for us. I know how everyone loves the trees and will not be happy to learn of this. To clarify exactly the details of the planned tree removal process and to attempt to provide any alternatives that might reduce or eliminate the necessity for this removal, Paul McGrady and I met (through zoom) with Gary Kelly, Director of Operations, Sangre de Cristo Electric Association. Gary is the person who specifies the particular mitigation effort and ultimately directs it.

    SDCEA is under great pressure to reduce the fuel load within their right-of-way. They have a great deal of liability for damages caused by wildfires. The massive fires in California are examples of what they are trying to avoid. These fires are causing multimillions of dollars in property loss and loss of life. When the origin can be traced back to a power company, they are held liable. So they want to remove all potential hazards before that happens. 

    You may refer to the meeting notes attached, but the bottom line is that there is very little that we can do to stop this. The only costs that SDCEA will bear are the costs of tree removal. We suggested repositioning the power lines to impact fewer trees. This cost would be on us. We inquired about burying the lines. This cost would also be on us. The cost in either of these two scenarios is extremely high. I have included some examples. 

    If the possibility of losing trees is totally unacceptable to you, you might be considering going off the grid and installing solar. This is probably not the solution either. I have included a brief analysis of what it might cost for a typical home in our area in case you are interested. 

    Whatever we do, we need to consider the fact that we are not the only customers on this distribution line. We have 2 neighbors, Rupps and Puls, who will be affected by some of our decisions. 

    We welcome any discussion of these issues. If there are any solutions that we have not considered. Please let us know and we will attempt to negotiate with SDCEA.

    It appears that SDCEA has decided that they will remove the trees within the power line right-of-way. As a Homeowners Association, we don’t have much say in this. We can make requests, but any possible viable options will cost a great deal of money both as an HOA and as individual homeowners.

  • Tanglewood – Hummviewer on Shark Tank

    If you have not seen the Hummviewer, you need to stop by the Creed Cabin and have John show you. Do it sometime when the hummingbirds are really active.

    A little background: John had always been fascinated with hummingbirds and was trying to figure out a way to get them to come up close while they were feeding. Not having much success with that, John devised a way using a clear face shield, to entice the birds to come close enough to feed from a feeder that he integrated with the face shield. Using this device, you can get amazing photos of these birds, and you can spend days just watching them up close and actually, in your face (ALMOST).

    So after a couple of years of developing this device, the Creeds are now going to have the opportunity to pitch it in front of the SHARK TANK lineup to explore its commercial potential.

    So, if you get a chance, put it on your calendars or schedule it to record the SHARK TANK episode on December 2 on ABC and offer John and Joan your support. Who knows, we may have the next great entrepreneur among us.

    Rebecca Balding Conway died Monday, July 18, 2022 in Salt Lake City, Utah.  She had suffered a stroke.  Becky is survived by her husband, James L. Conway, daughters Sarah Conway Cunningham (Sean) and their sons Charlie and Parker and Katie and her husband Andrew Maddox, her sister Michael Beck and brother John V. Balding.  She was predeceased by her parents, Russell and Sarah Balding, summer residents of Tanglewood Acres since 1963.   

    Becky was a long-time cabin owner in Tanglewood and had named it “the home of my heart”.  She also resided in Park City, Utah and Pasadena, CA.  

    Born September 21, 1948, she graduated from Kansas University majoring in drama.  She appeared for several summers at Creede Repertory Theater and won a Jefferson Award when working in Chicago.  She starred in “Silent Scream” and “The Boogens”, and had a recurring role in “Charmed”, among other professional appearances on TV, including the movies “The Gathering” and “The Gathering II”.   

    Following cremation, a memorial will be held in L.A. in September, and a Celebration of Life in July 2023 in Tanglewood.

    Peggy (Dull) Creed, 92, passed away on May 16, 2022, just 4 ½ months after losing the love of her life and husband of 73+ years, Lloyd E. Creed.  Born to Coah and Della Dull, July 10, 1929 in Wichita, KS, Peggy was preceded in death by her parents and brother Howard (Karen) Dull.  Surviving are:  brother Dan (Laura) Dull of Douglass, KS; her four sons – Mike (Shelley) Creed, Lake of the Ozarks, MO; Dave (Shirley) Creed, Wichita, KS; Steve Creed-Wichita; John (Joan) Creed, Loveland, CO; nine grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and numerous extended-family members.  A natural beauty, Peggy was honored as Wichita East’s Prom Queen (1947), 1948 Parnassus Queen while attending WSU, and as Army Day Queen.  A loving homemaker, Peggy’s greatest joys were serving her family, cheering on her boys, and relaxing in their family cabin in Westcliffe, Colorado.   Visitation to be held on Wednesday, May 25, from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. with funeral service beginning at 10:00 am, both at Andover United Methodist Church, 1429 N. Andover Rd., Andover, KS  67002.  Interment will follow at Wichita Park Cemetery.

    Linda Griffith Witter passed peacefully in her home on Saturday April 30, 2022 at the age of 70 after a short battle with pancreatic cancer.

    Funeral Services will be held at 3:00pm Tuesday, May 10, 2022 at the Central Christian Church in Denver. Visitation will be held prior to the service at 2:00pm. Interment will be the following day at 10:30am at Fort Logan National Cemetery Denver, CO.

    Linda Kay Griffith was born on June 13, 1951 in Irving, TX to Keith and Billie Griffith. Throughout life she has shown a spirit of being a strong-willed, determined, hospitable and caring woman which she has passed on to her family. After graduating from Texas Women’s University with a Bachelor of Nursing, she joined the United States Air Force to serve her country and see the world. While stationed at Tinker Air Force Base in Midwest City, Oklahoma, she met her loving husband, Steve Witter. They married on April 16, 1976 and celebrated 45 years together. They went on to have 2 children and lived there for 20 years.

    Linda was a registered nurse with the VA hospital in Oklahoma City for nearly 40 years. She was very passionate about her job and being an advocate for her patients. After retiring, she and Steve relocated to Denver to be closer to their grandchildren as well as their beloved cabin in Westcliffe, Colorado.

    Linda was a member of the Junior Service League and Garden Club in Oklahoma City. Linda enjoyed being an avid Mahjong player, capturing the perfect picture and baking with her grandchildren.

    Linda was preceded in death by both of her parents, Owen Keith Griffith and Billie Jo Griffith. She is survived by her husband, Steve Witter, along with her son, Todd Witter and daughter, Billie Wood. She has four grandchildren, Corbin Witter, Casteele Witter, Isabelle Wood, and Emmersyn Wood who were the joy of her life!  Linda will be greatly missed by many.     November 11, 1928 – December 24, 2021

    Wichita, Kansas – Lloyd Elden Creed, 93, passed away at his home in Wichita, Kansas on December 24, 2021. By his side was his loving wife of 73 years, Peggy (Dull) Creed. Born November 11, 1928, in Wellington, KS, Lloyd was the eldest of the six children of Edwin and Clara (Mezger) Creed.

    Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Florene Ross and Linda (Harvey) Goforth, and brother Larry Creed; surviving sisters are Lois Smetana and Leela (Earl) Haggard, both of Wichita. Lloyd was the proud father of four sons: Mike (Shelley) Creed, Lake of the Ozarks; Dave (Shirley) Creed, Wichita; Steve Creed, Wichita; John (Joan) Creed, Loveland Colorado. Family survivors also include nine grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

    Lloyd was a standout-athlete at Wichita East High School. He attended WSU, then represented Lampton Welding Supply as a successful salesman for 45 years. Upon retirement, Lloyd and Peggy enjoyed traveling and spending time at their family cabin in Westcliffe, Colorado. A man of great character and silent service, Lloyd served as a volunteer for the American Red Cross; he delivered blood, driving over 200,000 miles across the state of Kansas. He was a Mason for 65 years and a member of the Andover United Methodist Church. Lloyd fiercely battled the leukemia that eventually took his life.

    Visitation will be held on Friday, December 31, 2021 from 9:30 a.m to 11:00 a.m. with funeral service beginning at 11:00 a.m., both at:

    This summer brought many changes to property surrounding Tanglewood with forest management/mitigation work nearing completion. 

    The multiple people who delivered the mail over the summer have requested that everyone have a mailbox.  There is no way to determine if the mail is junk or something important.  

    Along those same lines, please also consider getting the green reflective address markers that are available from the fire department for $20.  The application forms are in a box outside the fire department.  This will allow the fire department to easily locate your cabin.  Plus, it’s a big help to those who volunteer to deliver the mail.

    The Tuesday Tanglewood trash pick up is intended to be for household trash only.  This does not include pine needles, slash, clothing, contractor debris, etc..  Volunteers pick up the trash and it is very difficult to load and unload heavy trash bags.  In addition, the cost goes up with the increased amount of bags.  We are often being charged $25, rather than the usual $15.  Your cooperation and understanding is greatly appreciated.

    Gary Coalson

    James Gary Coalson, of Carrollton Texas, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, December 29, 2020 after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease.  Gary was born August 5, 1937 in San Antonio, Texas.  He grew up in Tyler, Texas and graduated from Texas Tech University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.

    Gary worked for Gulf Oil, then Chevron, for over 35 years living in San Antonio, Texas, Little Rock, Arkansas, Shreveport, Louisiana, and Houston, Texas before retiring in Carrollton, Texas.   He was a true handyman who loved projects of all kinds, be it typical household repairs, giant kite building/flying, or the more ambitious design and construction of a homemade pop-up camper. Gary loved Colorado, enjoying time fishing and tinkering in his alpine workshop.  He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who was devoted to his family.  Gary led by example, a wonderful Christian man that was a light to all that knew him. 

    Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Maurine and Milton Coalson, and wife of 40 years, Gladene K. Coalson. Gary is survived by his loving wife of 19 years, Sandie Coalson; daughters, Michelle Casey, Sherri (Rodger) Moore; sons, James (Beth) Coalson, Damon (Tamara) Coalson, Max (Heather) Proctor, Bryan (Michele) Proctor; sister, Sylvia Gorsuch; brother, Robert (Joyce) Coalson; grandchildren, Ashley Coalson, Jamie Coalson, Avery Coalson, Connor Coalson, Joshua Moore, Jacob Moore, Joseph Moore, Collin Proctor, Jarod Proctor, Blake Proctor, Bailey Proctor; great grandchildren, Luke Moore, Audrey Moore, and Abby Moore.

    Exit 1 – Lavenue Property Route

    Between the covered bridge and the cattle guard there is a rough road that leads down to a fence separating us from the Lavenue property. Follow the white painted rocks marking the road. There is a wire gate with an EXIT sign on it. The combination to the lock is 8181. At the lower end of the property there is another gate with the combination: 2020

    Exit 2 – Timber Trails (Wint Cabin)/Boyer Puls Route

    Go up the hill to Mockingbird Hill road. Follow the road into the Wint property. Take the right fork of the circle drive. On your right you will see a gate with an EXIT sign. Follow the road until it forks and take the right fork. When you get out on to the gravel road, turn right going down the mountain. When you reach Willow Lane, use wire gate on right if regular gate is locked.

    Important

    These are fire exits only, not for regular traffic. You may hike up the exit 2 route to access the National Forest, but NO MOTORIZED TRAFFIC is to be used on these roads except in an emergency.

    SHOULD ANYONE IN TANGLEWOOD VIOLATE THESE AGREEMENTS WITH THE PROPERTY OWNERS, WE WILL LOSE THE RIGHTS TO THESE FIRE EXITS.

    Preface:  The electric company has a new, and what may be considered aggressive, program to manage vegetation around electric lines and poles.  This is a report from the HOA meeting with representatives from the company.

    SANGRE DE CRISTO ELECTRIC CO-OP MEETING

    August 17, 2020

    The meeting opened with an explanation that no clearing around power lines has been done for many years.  Clearing is necessary for fire mitigation and to allow access to power lines.  This Vegetation Management Initiative will be done for all areas covered by Sangre de Cristo Electric (SDCE).  They anticipate starting in the Westcliffe area in 1-2 years.  

    There is no way to estimate the cost to bury lines due to varying accessibility in different locations.  The difficult terrain makes it way more expensive to bury lines in Tanglewood.  Electric lines have to be buried 4’ deep.  SDCE has to do the work to ensure that it’s done correctly.

    SDCE will work with each homeowner to determine what is done with the downed trees.  They can leave the logs for firewood, mulch the logs or remove them.  

    There are three types of electrical lines in Tanglewood.  A primary line carries 7,200 volts of electricity and these lines have to be cleared of trees for 15’ on each side.  An example of a primary line is the one going up Pine Cone Lane (the road going uphill past the covered bridge).  A tap line carries power from a primary line to a group of cabins.  These lines also have to be cleared 15’ on each side.  Unfortunately, Tanglewood has quite a few of these lines and they may go across property, rather than being located on a pole near a road.  Both a primary line and a tap line carry 7,200 volts of electricity and therefore must be treated the same.  A secondary line carries 120-240 volts of electricity and it takes power from the tap line to the individual cabin.  The electric company does NOT maintain secondary lines. It is the responsibility of the home owner to maintain the line.

    SDCE representatives also mentioned that many meters are located on cabins.  The preference is to have meters moved to the nearest pole.  

    These changes will have a dramatic affect on the aesthetics of Tanglewood.  We all need to work together for our common good.  We are actively in contact with SDCE to determine the cost to develop a MASTER PLAN for Tanglewood.  This would likely involve moving or adding some electric poles so that Tap lines will be near a road, rather than crossing private property.  At this time, we are looking at every option to reduce the loss of trees.  Our recommendation is to NOT request a site visit from SDCE to determine the cost to bury your lines.  The cost is $275 and we feel that a Master Plan needs to be determined first.  In addition, the line to your cabin is a secondary line, and the electric company is not clearing trees around any secondary lines.

  • Gates to the Fire Escape

    Gates to the Fire Escape

    Minutes of the July 5, 2020, HOA meeting will be coming out soon however, everyone needs to know the gate codes to the east (downhill) fire escape route.  A cabin has been built on the property and the homeowners have graciously widened the fire escape road. The first gate code is 8181.  You will continue on to their driveway and exit out their front gate.  The code to the front gate is 2020.  Please keep this information confidential.

    There is a fire ban in Custer County. No open fires are allowed.

    HOA Meeting

    Wanted to take a moment to remind everyone that the Tanglewood HOA meeting will be on Sunday, July 5 at 2:00 at the chapel.  This will allow for social distancing and there are additional folding chairs available at the Keefer cabin.

    Work Day

    The annual workday will be on Friday, July 3 at 9:00. Please bring gloves and a rake. Things that need to be done include:

    1. Raking the pine cones and pine needles both at the chapel and the cookout area.
    2. Cleaning out the fire escape route through the Boyer property as the forest was thinned out for fire mitigation over the winter and there is quite a bit of slash covering the road.

    Neighboring Property

    The property below Tanglewood is private property.  We can still use the fire escape in an emergency. There is a gate across the road with a combination lock.  The code to open the lock is 8181.  The owners graciously had the road widened when they were having some trees removed on their property.

    Covid-19

    Information for COVID-19 is constantly changing. It is better if you visit Custer County web site for the latest information.

    Common Property

    One final reminder:  The area on either side of Goodwin Creek is common property and open to all homeowners.  In order to keep the natural beauty of the area for all to enjoy, please do not change or add anything that could disturb the aesthetic of the common area.

    HOA Annual Meeting

    The annual HOA meeting will be on July 5th at 2:00 at the chapel, weather permitting.  This will allow for social distancing.  We will try to continue both chapel and cookout, since both are outdoors.  Lawn chairs are available at the Keefer cabin. 

    Chapel

    Chapel will not start until after Memorial Day on June 1, 2020

    Work Day

    If a Tanglewood workday is needed, it will be on Friday, July 3 at 9am.  At this time, staining the covered bridge is the only project that has been mentioned.

    Chipping

    Annual chipping will be done August 26 and 27.  The chipper can handle limbs up to 8” and the limbs should be left long.  

    Dues

    Please remember to pay the annual HOA dues of $150.  Dues are due starting January 1 every year.

    a) Please deliver to Shari at the Copeland cabin at the upper end of PineCone lane and then left on Mockingbird Hill

    3) Paying by automatic transfer: If you would like to pay automatically every year and avoid having to think about it and write a check, call me (Tim Wint, 972.955.0995) and I will give you the bank routing and account number so that you can use to do this.

  • Please Lock the Red Gate

    Please Lock the Red Gate

    We have received reports that the red gate is being left open. Please, for the sake of all of the property owners in Tanglewood, DO NOT leave the red gate open. You are endangering everyone else’s property and compromising the physical security of anyone that might be inside Tanglewood when you do this. Think about the situation right now. There could really be some desperate people now and perhaps more to come as this craziness develops, so for the sake of us all, please lock the gate. If you come in and the gate is open, lock it and leave a note with your phone number. If a legitimate party is inside like contractors or realtors, they can call you and you can let them out. Please explain this “always lock” policy.  Anyone coming in that has a key and a legitimate need to be there should understand. If you don’t feel comfortable doing this, call the Custer County Sheriff’s office: (719)783-2270 and let them deal with it. Let them know which cabins are currently occupied if you have that information. 

    Just remember that until we have a sufficient number of people within Tanglewood to monitor comings and goings, you are the link to the security of this place.

  • The Passing of Troy Williams

    The Passing of Troy Williams

    Troy H. Williams was born to Charles Plummer and Sarah Greene Starke Williams on January 19, 1939 in the very small town of Gasburg in Brunswick County, Virginia.  His elementary School education years were in a three room school.  Even as an elementary student he wanted to become a doctor.  He graduated from Brunswick County High School at age 17, and became a student at Virginia Military Institute.  VMI had an important role in helping develop and achieve his plans for medical school. 

    In 1960, he began Medical School, and in his third year bought a used Volkswagen-his first car.  In 1964 he graduated and began an internship at Letterman Army Hospital in San Francisco.  The bonus of his assignment was a friendship with John Wurster and his wife Pat, who are enjoying a wonderful friendship and are our neighbors in Temple. 

    Then on to Walter Reed for 4 years of Internal Medicine.  He was one of 6 Fellows to fly to Warm Springs, Georgia when President Eisenhower had his heart attack.  They returned to Walter Reed by train and monitored the president 24 hours a day behind a screen in his hospital bed on the train.  It was one of his best experiences during his training.

    Dr. Williams served a year in Vietnam at Chu Lai at an EVAC hospital.  Upon his return, he was sent to Aurora, Co. for a fellowship in cardiology for the next 2 years.  Then to Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio as assistant chief of cardiology.  Subsequently he was part of the team who followed President Johnson until his death.  He always felt lucky to have been involved with the care of two presidents.     

    He and Mary met on Dec. 7, 1972 and married on Feb. 2, 1974 at the chapel on Ft. Sam Houston. In 1975 Troy returned to Fitzsimmons to continue the final years of his Army career.  Their son Andrew was born Aug. 20, 1976 and the adventure continued.  He accepted a position at Scott & White in Temple upon his retirement from the Army.

    Troy was a man of many talents.  He loved playing bridge, the Denver Broncos, expanding his interest in golf, history and traveling.  Andrew was almost always along and they enjoyed many adventures as a family.  He volunteered as an occasional Sunday school teacher for the Saints & Sinners Class.  As they aged they turned to small group adventure travel, and made friends with many of the group.  He will be missed by all who knew him.

    We have several unidentified lock boxes on the red gate. For security purposes, we are trying to keep up with who owns these boxes and determine if they are currently being used or not. If you have a box on the gate, please let us know by replying to this email. Please describe the lockbox and if you have the latest key in it. If we don’t get responses in a reasonable time frame, unidentified boxes will be removed.
